Bicycling the Tunnel of Trees is best begun in Harbor Springs. Ride Northbound on M-119 along the Lake Michigan shoreline, with the roadway being very narrow and winding. The corridor, as fitting of its nickname, is encased with tree canopy which creates a sort of tunnel feel. Periodic openings in the canopy offer views of Lake Michigan. Provisions are available in Good Hart, and Cross Village, then continue up to the South boundary of Wilderness State Park at Sturgeon Bay Dunes. The return back to Harbor Springs along Pleasantview Road is hilly terrain with scenic vistas of the countryside.
A narrow tree-lined roadway along the Lake Michigan bluff, with sights of the water, beautiful homes, and scenery, all with a tradition of Native American history. Good Hart a good shopping stop.
Spring travel is less congested and provides the best views of the lake and homes along the route, in the absence of summer lush vegetation.
Tips on navigation. Weekdays, much less traffic. No centerline stripe. Slow driving, less than 25 mph. Call ahead for business hours.
