Lake Charlevoix South Shore Bicycle 1

Lake Charlevoix South Shore Bicycle

This short jaunt along Lake Charlevoix’s south side is filled with scenery and adventure. As you depart Boyne City, you will initially travel with uninterrupted views of Lake Charlevoix. As the third largest lake in Michigan, it boasts big clear water and magnificent views. Upon reaching Advance, the traffic will reduce, as many cars diverge toward East Jordan, and the paved shoulder gets narrow. Whiting Park is a great stop for a swim, with a big sandy beach and picnic & restrooms available.

From Advance to Ironton, the route winds through wooded roadside to enhance your water-filled journey. Ironton is the home of the Ironton Ferry, a short hop across the beginning of South Arm of Lake Charlevoix. A small fee is required for the portage, so have some cash ready. Upon landing, find a comfortable seat on the patio overlooking the water at The Landings – a beach-themed restaurant that welcomes bikers and boaters alike.

After refueling at the restaurant, board the ferry again for your return journey. As with any trip in Northern Michigan, you will find that there-and-back provides no lack of views. Seeing the trip all over again, East Bound, brings new scenery you may have missed from your rear view mirror. Back in Boyne City, drop off your bike and nestle into one of the many restaurants for a post-ride appetizer and drink.
